A friend of mine has been in a small parish group for many years. I asked her why she kept going and she replied that it was for others. She said that her preference would be to spend her time some other way but that the lonely people who attended the group needed someone to be there to welcome them.
St Paul did not eat meat sacrificed to idols for the same reason and encouraged other Christians to do the same - for others.
There is no 'in principle' reason for not having Communion on the hand. It is for the sake of the weak, for the sake of those who are not as well catechised, not as attentive, not as strong in their belief in the real presence; for the sake of the children, that we propose it should be given only on the tongue!
Dear Fathers,
ReplyDeleteBless you for launching this necessary project! I have been keeping an eye on the signatures, and unfortunately there are so many "anonymous" ones. They certainly won't count. Perhaps you could post a notice on your blog to that effect and ask everyone to sign their names, otherwise it's a wasted effort!
God bless you and Our Lady keep you under Her mantle of protection.

Dear Jane, Thank you for your thanks, and for your signature. Don't worry about the anonymous signatures. This is an option given for those who do not wish to show their names on-screen but I can assure you that their names appear on the petition; otherwise they are deleted. As for petitioners who make comments that are unacceptable these will also need to be deleted before the petition is sent. For example, 'Communion on the hand is a blasphemy!' is an unacceptable comment. Fr Speekman
ReplyDeleteI (with the Help of God's grace, of course) have personally "rescued" Jesus twice, each time from an adult man, who was taking the Blessed Sacrament out of the Church while "playing" with it with a scornful and derisive look on his face. The last time this happened was Hallowe'en 2010. Abuse of the Blessed Sacrament would be much more difficult if it were given on the tongue. Possibly, too, many abusers would not be bold enough to receive Him on the tongue, for that would involve opening themselves to Him much more than merely accepting on the palm of the hand what appears to be merely a wafer.
